WHO ARE WE?

OCALS Learning Services, accredited by ProLiteracy, is a not-for-profit group of volunteers who provide FREE one-to-one tutoring instructions to adults who want to improve their reading, writing, and English speaking skills.

WHY ARE WE NEEDED?

Literacy was once defined as the ability to read or write.  We now realize that literacy extends beyond the acquisition of reading and writing and entails the ability to use these skills in a socially appropriate context. The true definition of literacy now encompasses anything from computer literacy to citizenship to home budgeting.  By learning to read, write, speak English and communicate more effectively, our students become more successful and fulfilled in all aspects of life.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Reading and writing provides freedom from the darkness of illiteracy, increased self-confidence and independence, increased earning potential, and empowerment to become better parents, employees and citizens. OCALS provides assistance in improving the quality of life for all those in need in Orleans County and surrounding areas.
